Sussex Ladies KO 2017-18 (published 12-Sep-17)
The following has been sent to all clubs using a contact from fixtures live. If you've not received it, please amend contact details and let me know.
It was noted at the Ladies Competition meeting that the current format seems to work but ideally there would be less teams in the Plate competition so that there was less of a wait in between games. The suggestion being a cup 'day' tournament for each division (1-3). Organising 3 separate events alongside the ongoing cup comp throughout the season is a significant responsibility. As such, I have devised a possible solution. As the lower comp (Vase) is the one where teams are less able to sign up to (usually due to cup tied players who have been pulled to play in higher teams), my suggestion is that the Plate is open to Div one and top 3 teams of Div 2 (as it stands at Christmas). Then the Vase would be open for most of Div 2 (9 teams) and Div 3. This should result in less teams in the Plate. It should also stop us reverting to a league cup, still allowing teams to play across different leagues. If this does not work, we can discuss again at the competition meeting and look to an alternative format.
For this season, there will be 3 competitions running:
Cup: Sussex teams playing in the Premier Division and above are eligible to enter.
Plate: Sussex teams playing in Division 1 and the top 3 teams from division 2, as it stands at Christmas, are eligible.
Vase: Sussex teams playing in Division 3 and those 4th or below in division 2 (as it stands at Christmas) are eligible.
The dates for each competition are as follows:
Cup First Round: 28th October 2017
Cup Second Round: 6th January 2018
Cup Semi Final: 7th April 2018
Vase and Plate Tournament day: 7th April 2018
Finals for all competitions: Saturday 12th May.
Please take note that the days are organised around league dates. As such, they are often in school holidays. Please take this into consideration when entering teams. Particularly clubs with more than one team who may end up unable to field their lowest team on the Vase/Plate day due to availability.
Sussex HUA will provide umpires for all rounds of the cup and for the finals of all comps. However, each team must provide one umpire for the day to take part in the Vase or Plate competition on 7th April.
Sussex are NOT charging teams to enter into any competition this season.
If you would like to enter any of the competitions, please do so by responding to this email. State the team, the competition they wish to enter and the best person for me to contact with competition details.
DEADLINE: Cup entries must be received by Saturday 30th September.
You have until January 6th to decide if you wish to enter into the Vase or Plate competition.
If you've any questions before deciding, please do ask. You can email me or call me on 07528536388.
All the best,

SHA AGM Officer Change (published 01-Jul-17)
A big thanks to all the clubs that made it to the AGM. There were a number of notable absences from clubs that had won various leagues this year. A real shame that some of the larger clubs failed to represent themselves.
The meeting said a huge thanks and farewell to outgoing President Maureen Glynn after 10 years of service as President, and also to John Murphy who has stood down as County Chairman after a superb tenure of active involvement at all levels of hockey. They will be replaced by (on the left of this photo) Mike Acott as President and Ian Anguige as Chairman (on the right of the photo).
Umpires and the Sussex Leagues (published 07-Jun-17)
Last season there were a number of occasions where umpires officiating in Sussex league games were not recorded on the Sussex HUA database, and appeared to not have the correct qualifications. On investigation the majority of these umpires had taken courses and qualified in other parts of the country, but were not known to Sussex HUA.
In order to clarify the situation the Sussex Men's Open League have changed the league rules to state:
"All umpires provided by clubs to League matches must be, at least, associate members of the Sussex Hockey Umpires Association"
The Sussex Ladies League already have the following rule:
"All umpires in Divisions 1 to 3 shall be at least an Associate Member of the Sussex Hockey Umpires Association"
Would clubs please use the summer to ensure the umpires they plan to use next season meet the above criteria and have the required qualifications for the league they are umpiring. It is the umpires' responsibility to ensure that Sussex HUA have the correct details, including their 6 digit England Hockey Registration Number and current qualification. They should contact the Sussex HUA membership secretary or myself with any queries.

Sussex In2Hockey Tournament (published 05-Mar-17)
What a great day at the Sussex In2hockey Tournament and many thanks for all the support and help from Club Managers, parents, umpires and admin helpers (Many who I twisted their arm on the day and handed them a clipboard). Everyone helped make the day run pretty much to schedule and we wouldn’t be able to run events like this without the support and help we get at the event. I am sure you will all support me in saying a big Thank you to Hurstpierpoint College for hosting the event and providing the bacon rolls!
With 50 teams in total entering it is the biggest event in the calendar for Junior Clubs. It was great to have so many emerging teams from some of the clubs with small junior sections entering so that everyone could take part. Encouraging children to play hockey and take part and compete is what we are all striving to achieve and I think an event like this shows how rewarding it is for us all.
Congratulations to the Winners and Runners up who will now go on to the Regional rounds and represent Sussex. I will send details of the qualifying teams through to the South Hockey Association and you will then hear back from them with more details in due course.

Sad news - Tom Waterhouse (published 18-Jan-17)
It is with great sadness that I have to inform the Sussex Hockey Community, of the death of Tom Waterhouse a County Official for many years.
Tom was a player for Hailsham and an appointed umpire for the Sussex Umpires Association for many seasons.
During the 1990’s Tom was Secretary of the Men’s County H.A and played a important part in planning the current Association which was formed in 2001 when the Men’s and Women’s Associations amalgamated.
Later in life Tom was often to be found watching matches at Eastbourne, I will miss his encouragement as an umpire, but most of all I will miss Tom as a very good friend.
Our thoughts are with Tom’s family and friends at this sad time.
The funeral will be on Monday 30th January 2017 at St Andrews Church, Seaside, Eastbourne at 12.00 noon.

Sussex Mens Open League Rule Change (published 16-Aug-16)
Please note the new Sussex Open League (Mens) rule, which has been advised to clubs earlier and at the AGM regarding appointed umpires for Division 1 teams.
Each club represented in Division One will nominate to the League pool by 01 September at least one umpire for each participating team who holds as a minimum, the Level 1 assessed umpiring qualification and who has been approved by the Appointments Officer as having the appropriate experience and expertise.
The nominated umpire(s) must, between them, be able to cover the whole season’s league matches.
Any club failing to provide the required umpire(s) for 6 matches (regardless of whether or not the games take place) will be fined.
I hope that you all have taken action on this and already advised the umpires Appointments Officer of your proposed umpires for the first half of the season. Please check the umpires association website for contact details.

RULE CHANGE - EFFECTIVE THIS WEEKEND (published 25-Feb-16)
AS from THIS FRIDAY, 26th FEBRUARY, England Hockey have adopted the following change to the rules:
This is a change to rule 13.2 which relates to the taking of the attacking free hit within 5 metres of the circle and will be implemented AT ALL LEVELS OF THE 11 A-A-SIDE game in England
13.2 c. when a free hit is awarded to the attack within the 23 metres area, all players other than the player taking the free hit must be at least 5 metres from the ball, except as specifically indicated below for attacking free hits awarded within 5 metres of the circle
13.4 f. from a free hit awarded to the attack within the 23 metres area, the ball must not be played into the circle until IT HAS TRAVELLED AT LEAST 5 METRES OR HAS BEEN TOUCHED BY A PLAYER OF THE DEFENDING TEAM.
However, please note that, if there is a stoppage in time between the awarding of the free hit and the re-starting play, then ALL the players, INCLUDING THE DEFENDERS IN THE CIRCLE must be at least 5 metres away.
This means that a player taking the hit will not be able to move the ball a metre for another player to run on to the pass and play the ball straight in to the circle.

Hockey matches involving under 18 players (published 30-Nov-15)
There has been a very important update from Southern Counties Hockey Association regarding goalkeepers in junior (under 18) games. A fully kitted goalkeeper is no longer a mandatory requirement but a strong recommendation.
The appendices to the SCHA Child Protection Guidelines are now as follows.
SCHA CHILD PROTECTION GUIDELINES November 2015
Instruction regarding Head Injuries
This instruction applies to all junior hockey played within the jurisdiction of the Southern Counties HA and is a part of the Association’s Child Protection Guidelines. It also applies to any junior player injured in a senior match.
Any player receiving a head injury MUST be removed from the field of play by the coach/manager as soon as it is medically safe to do so and qualified medical opinion attention sought from an A&E department or a registered medical practitioner.
Umpires officiating at junior games are instructed not to permit the match to continue until the injured player has been removed and not to allow the injured player to return to the field of play during the course of the game.
In tournament hockey it is conceivable that an injured player will receive attention and be passed fit for play. Tournament directors/organisers must be sure that proper medical treatment/advice has been sought before allowing the player to participate further in the tournament.
Goalkeepers in Junior Hockey
The Southern Counties Hockey Association strongly recommends that all teams playing 11 a side matches where all, or a substantial proportion are under 18 should always use a fully equipped goalkeeper.
For the avoidance of doubt, the junior game is played under the standard Rules of Hockey. There are no variations for the junior game and, as per the ruling of the South Council earlier this month, if a goalkeeper is injured or suspended then the team has the option of bringing on a substitute goalkeeper who is already kitted up or playing with a kicking back (or with 11 outfield players). The previous South regulation that all teams must play with a fully kitted goalkeeper is no longer a stipulation, rather a recommendation. Time must not be stopped for someone else to get kitted up.
Sad News - Don Bristow (published 13-Nov-15)
I’m sorry to report the sad death of one of the Association’s Vice Presidents, Don Bristow, who died last Tuesday in hospital at the Princess Royal following an operation at the age of 91.

Don's funeral is on Thursday 26th November at 11.00am at St Johns Church in Preston Village, Brighton followed by a get together at the Preston Bowls club which is over the road to the south.

Keith Novis - Funeral Details (published 21-Sep-15)
It is with great regret we must inform the County of the death of Keith Novis.
Keith was a County umpire, hockey player and huge supporter of hockey in Sussex.
Keith was instrumental in the reformation of Newhaven Hockey club and had also been a team captain at Lewes in his playing days. But most will remember him as the happy smiling umpire on the County men's circuit.
In his latter years Keith could be frequently found supporting his daughter at Hailsham and grandsons playing for Lewes 1s and Chichester 1s. He enjoyed watching quality hockey followed by a pint in the club house surrounded by friends and family.
Keith will be sorely missed in the County and we send our condolences to his family at this sad time.
The funeral will take place at Eastbourne Crematorium on October 15th at 13-45 in the main chapel, then back to the Hydro Hotel afterwards. Normal funeral clothing to be worn please, flowers would be welcome or donations to be made to Dementia UK.

Buxted Park (published 15-Sep-15)
It is always sad when a Sussex club decides to call it a day, but Buxted Park will be playing their last match at Buxted on October 11th.
Buxted have been a driving force in Mixed hockey in Sussex for many years, and have produced many players that have gone on to play mens and ladies hockey at other clubs to a high standard.
Buxted have slowly been disposing of their hockey assets and what remains are 2 hockey goals, almost new and in great condition (including nets). This is a great opportunity because they will be free to a deserving home as long as they can be collected from Buxted.

Ladies Sussex KO Competitions News (published 15-Aug-15)
In response to the comments raised regarding the new competition format, there has been one significant change; the removal of the 'Senior Cup' with teams playing in the Premier League joining the same competition as those playing above the Sussex Premier League. The competitions will run as below:
Cup - open to teams playing in Sussex Premier League and above
Plate - Open to teams playing in Sussex Div 1 and 2 only
Vase Competition Day - Open to teams playing in Div 3 and 4 only
Proposed dates for this year's competitions are:
Preliminary Round for Cup/Plate if needed: Saturday 12th September 2015
Round 1 for Cup/Plate: Saturday 31st October 2015
Round 2 for Cup/Plate: Saturday 12th December 2015
Semi-Finals Day for Cup and Plate: Saturday 2nd April 2016
VASE Competition Day: Saturday 23rd April 2016
Finals Day: Saturday 7th May 2016
Vase Competition Day - Each team participating will be expected to pay a contribution towards pitch costs. We will be looking for two pitches in different locations across the county. If you believe your club could provide us with a pitch for the entire day, please get in contact.
If you would like to enter a team into a competition, please contact me by Friday 21st.
Please state the team, the competition you wish to enter them into and contact details of the person you wish me to correspond with.
Please see updated rules for this season's competitions
before entering a team.
Ladies KO Competitions (published 01-Aug-15)
At this year's competition meeting, a new format was suggested. The aims of which are:
That teams who enter play games at a challenging yet accessible level by limiting entry to each competition to teams playing in a similar leagues
To avoid last minute forfeiting of games. This often happens when higher teams pull from lower teams in a club, thus the lower team's game is cancelled
To encourage more teams to enter from a variety of clubs across the county
Suggested New Format:
1. A Senior Cup for those teams playing outside the County League.
2. A Premier Division Cup for those teams playing in the Premier League
3. A cup for teams playing in Division 1 & 2.
All the above competitions are played in the normal way with set dates and the winners progress. There will be no second chance competitions for teams who lose in the 1st round.
4. To encourage more teams in Division 3 & 4 to take part in a cup competition, we will run a separate competition day. The plan is to divide all the clubs who wish to take part into 2 or 4 pools (dependant on entries). The pool matches would all be played on 1 day in a round robin format with all teams in a pool playing all the other teams in that pool in short time matches. Pools would be held at 2 separate venues if there were 4 pools the 2 pool winners at each venue would playoff for 1 final place. The plan is to try and create a festival type competition. The overall winners at both venues would progress to the final on 'Finals Day' of the above competitions.
As there were so few clubs represented at the Competitions Meeting, we request that each club respond by Sunday 9th August with your Yes or No response to this question:
COMPULSORY QUESTION - Should the Sussex Cup format be changed to that outlined above? Yes/No
OPTIONAL QUESTION - Do you have any comments on how we can arrange the cups better in the future?
Please note, I am away on holiday and will not respond to emails until the week beginning Monday 10th August. We will collate responses and then send out an invite to this year's competition by Friday 14th August. Deadline for entry will be Friday 21st August and the competition (in whichever format we go with) will be set up on Fixtures Live by the start of September.

Within the League – rules and the differences between Sussex Division 1 and the rest of the Sussex Leagues – is this reasonable or confusing? Application of rules within the Kent Sussex Divisions – again reasonable or confusing. What should be done about Division 5!! Options appreciated for 2015 – 2016.
Umpires – what can be done to get more qualified umpires putting their names forward for the Sussex Pool of umpires?
It would help if any recommendation/suggestions could be forwarded to myself or Mike Acott prior to the meetings so they circulated and added to the agenda for discussion.
